The Benefits of Fishing On An Inflatable Paddleboard
Paddleboards are incredibly versatile, they can be used for so many different things, so why not fishing? On a paddleboard, you can be high up, making it easier to see fish in the water or the perfect fishing spot. There are paddleboards specifically for fishing that are wide and extremely stable, where you don’t have to worry about getting flipped over when reeling in the big one.
Paddleboards made for fishing also have fishing rod holders, coolers, seats, and other accessories. You don’t need a lot of space to store or transport them either since the inflatable paddleboards can be folded up and placed in a storage bag. They are extremely durable meaning you don’t have to worry about dinging or scratching them on the occasional rock you may bump into or if you hit bottom.
The large flat deck of the board makes it easier to maneuver around on the board, and you can fish from all four sides of the board with ease, unlike the similar kayak which limits movement on the vessel. It can also be used for other common paddleboard activities which makes them suitable for all ages, you can take your board out for fishing, go for a leisurely paddle, or even do some yoga if you want.

It is strapped down with the D-links located in the middle and helps make up for the lack of storage on the rest of the board.
The full-length sponsons make it look like a fishing SUP. They give stability needed for fishing almost like a kayak and add a little bit of safety because there are 2 independent chambers. I would’ve liked to see more storage if you decide to remove the cooler. It’s basically a minimalist paddleboard with sponsons. The sponsons are cool because they add that little extra bit of safety that some prefer. Not many boards at this range include a seat, making this board pretty great and definitely a good buy for those who really want a seat and cooler with them when they fish.

This board is a little less like a fishing board in shape and more like a touring board. If you are planning on going to a spot that is further away or maybe doing more distance paddling than fishing this board is perfect.
Hippocamp is made with military grade dual-layered PVC with a high-density drop-stitch core making it durable and rigid. Unlike any of the boards on this list, there is a carbon fiber stringer on the bottom and top, making it even more rigid and more like a hard paddleboard. The footpad is a dual-layered fingerprint texture IXPE making it comfortable and giving a better grip than most. There is a fishing rod mount near the nose and 2 more mounts on the sides
Included with this board is an impressive amount of accessories, as usual, you get the board, a pump with pressure gauge, and a very nice backpack/storage bag with wheels. The extra thought put into the board shows with things like the carbon fiber stringer, and the softer more comfortable footpad. This is the true fishing ISUP, measures 12 feet 6 inches long, 40 inches wide, and 6 inches thick. The weight capacity is 350lbs. It has a 3 removable fin set up, which is necessary due to the size of this thing.
It has a 4 D-link bungee system on the nose, 4 D-links down each side, and 2 D-links on the tail. The package includes a multi-purpose storage box that fits on the nose. The box has two fishing rod holders built into it.
The nose is pointed making it easier to glide through the water, the tail is a wide swallow tail design creating one of the most stable boards out there. The tail has a removable electric motor mount which can take up to a 45 lbs motor with a 55 lbs thrust.
The board is made of 1000 denier, with reinforced drop stitch, and a quadruple overlap seam. The EVA foot pad is large and covers much of the deck. There is a paddle pocket directly below the nose bungee system to keep your paddle secure when fighting that fish. There is a handle on the nose, middle, and both sides of the swallow tail for easy transportation. Sea Eagle built in a 36-inch ruler onto the deck of the board, meaning you can reel in the fish, and just flop it down on the deck to see how long it is.
You get some cool stuff with this board as well. It comes with the standard double action pump with pressure gauge, repair kit, and backpack/storage bag. What’s really cool is included with all of that is a kayak paddle, storage bag with 2 fishing rod holders built it, an electric motor mount, and maybe the coolest part, a swivel seat that mounts right onto the board. It attaches to the D-links, with 2 fishing rod mounts on it, and weighs only 15 lbs.
What I really like about the Sea Eagle Fish ISUP is it can be a paddleboard that could be fun for just hanging out at the lake, or it can be a specialized fishing vessel. The added swivel seat is a neat feature and usually something you only see on boats or kayaks. I love the electric motor mount as well because being able to use a trolling motor is not something people usually can do on a paddleboard. If you are a fishing advocate and want to fish on lakes, rivers, or oceans, you’re going to love this board.
- Very wide and stable
- Electric Motor Mount
- Swivel Seat Included
- Kayak and Paddleboard Paddle Included
- 4 Fishing Rod Holders on box and seat
- D-links along sides for storage
- Paddle Pocket
Good: Elkton Outdoors Grebe Fishing ISUP – This board is a little more budget friendly than some of the others and it is a true fishing paddleboard. It has the 3 mounting plates for fishing rod holders. There are 2 bungee systems for storage and D-links in the middle for a seat or cooler.
It’s not as big as some of the others but it’s going to be stable enough to catch some fish. Good overall board if you want to be able to fish and also have a board for other activities as well.
Better: SBBC Hippocamp Fishing ISUP – I really love this board and if I could have two best boards on this list then this would be one of them. What I really love about it is all the thought and small details that are put into it giving a slight edge over other boards. They added a carbon fiber stringer which I’ve never seen on an inflatable paddleboard, and the ride will be stable and rigid.
The footpad is designed for comfort which is important because you may end up standing on it for hours. They include a cooler, a seat, 2 fishing rod mounts, and a kayak paddle which are all good options to have when it comes to fishing. The board itself could be used for any other paddleboard activities and might even be better than some of the touring boards out there. I really like the company too, they seem to care about their customers and products which is always something worth paying for.
Best: Sea Eagle Fish ISUP – When it comes to fishing you can’t beat this paddleboard. It’s still a very portable inflatable paddleboard but it really doesn’t look like it. I can’t believe it can fold up and fit into a bag. The electric motor option is a really cool accessory and something I never thought about adding to a paddleboard. You can basically turn it into a boat with the swivel seat and motor attached. Also if you feel like going out for a paddle, it will perform just like any other paddleboard, and you’re going to have a hard time falling off due to the stability it has.
I think this is a very impressive product that has several awesome features. Definitely not going to disappoint.
What To Consider
Stability – You don’t want to have to worry about falling off your board when casting or reeling something in. Width plays the largest roll when it comes to stability but things like length and shape are important too.
Some companies have put sponsons on their boards to help make their boards wider, more stable, and also thicker, but sponsons are not always necessary when buying a fishing board. As long as the board is at least 11 feet and over 30 inches wide you are going to be ok. If you are a taller or bigger person you are going to want to think about getting something wider than most. How stable you want a board to really depend on you and what you can handle.
Fishing Rod Mounts – A lot of fishing paddleboards have accessory mounts already on the board. If you already have a board or you want more mounts Scotty makes a good one that is compatible with many of their other fishing accessories like the Scotty #230 Powerlock Rod Holder, camera holders, anchor mounts, and much more.
Storage – Most of the time when fishing you are going to end up bringing lots of gear. You want to think about how much you can fit on the board and still be comfortable. A lot of times you can bring a cooler that can also be used as a seat, but if you’d rather have a real seat you should think about the weight limit, size of the deck, and D-link locations of the board you purchase.
