Best Coil Leash For Stand Up Paddleboards (SUP) 2019

Why Buy A Coil Leash For Stand Up Paddleboarding?

Leashes “connect” your body to your paddleboard or surfing board so it won’t go far if you fall off. They’re around 10 feet on average to not be in your way while you’re paddling, but to be short enough to where your paddleboard will be right by you if you fall. It’s not only convenient but sometimes necessary for your safety.

The leashes we’re looking at today are coil leashes that stretch. They’re great for flat water paddling since it stretches and recoils so it won’t be in your way, getting caught on your feet or items stored on your board. They’re also great for surfing, even though straight leashes are more common when surfing.

Let’s get to it.

Unigear makes and sells this 10 feet coiled leash. It comes in lots of different colors so you can be as stylish as you want out there while hitting the waves.

What I like about Unigear is that they’re also including a waterproof wallet that is IPX8 rated so you can bring items like your phone and keys with you if it fits.

The leash is a 10 feet leash when fully stretched, and is made with the same strong 7mm urethane coil we saw on the Leader Accessories leash above. The ankle cuff put on it is extremely soft and has a hidden key pocket where you can store your car key or house key while you’re out on the water. I always appreciate multi-use products.

All connections on the Unigear Premium Coiled Leash is made with stainless steel and will hold up against pressure, hard waves, and pulls. It also swivels which is so convenient and something you have to use yourself to realize how nice it is.

A triple wrap rail saver will keep your board secured to you, and a lifetime warranty will tell you that Unigear really believes in their product.

Santa Barbara Surfing, a company I bet you’ve heard about before. They were founded in 1999 and has been making killer products since. This coiled leash is no exception.

It’s a 10 feet leash with a lifetime warranty that has one of the most comfortable ankle cuffs I have ever felt. If it was any bigger I could use it as a pillow.

A very strong leash will keep you and your board secured on the water. It’s made with the same strong 7mm urethane coil cord we saw on the leashes above. The connections are molded-in 316 stainless steel. They swivel, and with a triple railsaver, not even the hardest hits will rip your board away from you while making sure that the leash won’t wear and tear your board or the leash itself.

Back to the ankle cuff, it has a hidden key pocket where you can store one key while out.

The SBS 10′ Coiled SUP Leash is an incredible leash that is extremely comfortable. A great buy overall that I truly recommend.

Last but not least, the Wave Tribe ECO surfboard leash. If you’re out on the water every day like the people that made this product and want a leash that will last you years and years, this is it.

First off, the lifetime warranty is no joke. If you break this leash, Wave Tribe will replace it.

Second, this leash is made with recycled plastic while still being as strong as any other leash on the market. Not only do they care about their products to make sure you’ll get the best of the best, but it’s also made with recycled materials to leave a smaller footprint on the planet, big props to Wave Tribe.

The leash we’re looking at is the 10 feet coil leash, but Wave Tribe makes several other options depending on what you want. They make straight leashes as well which are popular with surfers. They all come in different lengths.

Wave Tribe uses a double swivel technology to stop the leash from tangling and the cuff stays secured to your ankle with “superglue” velcro.

The Wave Tribe ECO Surfboard Leash is a great leash made with recycled materials, lifetime warranty, from a great company that wants to do the right thing. It’s a leash that will last you forever and if it does break, Wave Tribe will send you a new one. It’s a tie between this and the Santa Barbara Surfing’s leash and either of them will make you a happy paddleboarder or surfer.

PROS

  • 10 feet
  • Made with 7mm coil
  • Comfortable ankle cuff
  • Hidden key pocket

My Recommendations

As you might’ve realized by now, there are not a lot of differences between the coil leashes we’ve looked at. They’re all great leashes and any one of them will be excellent. There are a small differences with some frills here and there that you’ll have to consider. They’re also from different companies, so support the one you like the most, you can’t go wrong with either of them.

Here are my recommendations, note that I think all of them are great though and the differences are small.

Good: Unigear Premium 10′ Coiled SUP Leash – Unigear has made a reliable coil leash that will do a great job at keeping you and your board safe and secure. Stainless steel connections that swivel, a triple wrap rail saver, lifetime warranty, and an included waterproof wallet makes this a great choice.

Better: Wave Tribe ECO Surfboard Leash – Both the Wave Tribe and the SBS leashes are awesome leashes so take the better/best with a grain of salt. I love that Wave Tribe has put work into making this an eco product with recycled materials. Even with that, the product is still one of the best leashes on the market that won’t disappoint. And if it breaks, Wave Tribe will send you a new one.

Best: SBS 10′ Coiled SUP Leash – The SBS coiled leash has the most comfortable ankle cuff on the market in my opinion, and it matters to me. A hidden key pocket, lifetime warranty, stainless steel connections that swivel, a triple railsaver, and made by a company that knows the water in and out, makes this my favorite leash on today’s list.

Frequently Asked Questions

What leash is right for me? Length? Coil vs straight?

It depends on the activity. For surfing, I recommend finding a leash that is about one foot longer than your board. I also recommend a straight leash for surfing and not a coil leash as they allow the board to go further away and not recoil back and hit you.

For stand up paddleboarding I like ankle coil leashes, the length doesn’t matter as much. Coil leashes nowadays have connections that swivel and won’t be in the way as much as it might sound they would.

I have tried both straight and coil leashes when paddleboarding and what bothered me with the straight leash is that I had to put it inside my pants to stop it from dragging in the water. I couldn’t just put it on the paddleboard as water kept dragging it back down. The coil leash, however, was never in the way as it was coiled up and only extended when I got off the board.

Other than a leash, I recommend buying a PFD to stay safe out there on the water. Check out our post on the best PFD’s.
