Best Coil SUP Leash For Surfing/Paddleboarding 2024

Why Buy A Coil Leash For Stand Up Paddle Boarding?

SUP leashes “connect” your body to your paddle board or SUP surfboard so it won’t go far if you fall off.

They’re around 10 feet on average and coiled to not be in your way while you’re paddling, but to be short enough your paddle board will be right by you if you fall.

It’s not only convenient but sometimes necessary for your safety.

The SUP leashes we’re looking at today are coil leashes that stretch. They’re great for flat water paddling since it stretches and recoils so it won’t be in your way, getting caught on your feet or items stored on your board.

They’re also great for surfing, even though straight leashes are more common when surfing.

Let’s get to it.

My Recommendations For Best SUP Coil Leash

As you might’ve realized by now, there are not a lot of differences between the coil SUP leashes we’ve looked at.

They’re all great SUP leashes and any one of them will be excellent. There are small differences with some frills here and there that you’ll have to consider.

They’re also from different companies, so support the one you like the most, you can’t go wrong with either of them.

Here are my recommendations, note that I think all of them are great though and the differences are small.

Frequently Asked Questions About SUP Coil Leashes

What SUP leash is right for me? Length? Coil vs straight?

It depends on the activity. For surfing, I recommend finding a SUP leash that is about one foot longer than your board.

I also recommend a straight leash for SUP surfing and not a coil leash as they allow the board to go further away and not recoil back and hit you.

For stand up paddle boarding I like ankle coil leashes, the length doesn’t matter as much. Coil leashes nowadays have connections that swivel and won’t be in the way as much as it might sound they would.

I have tried both straight and coil SUP leashes when paddle boarding and what bothered me with the straight leash is that I had to put it inside my pants to stop it from dragging in the water.

I couldn’t just put it on the paddle board as the water kept dragging it back down. The coil leash, however, was never in the way as it was coiled up and only extended when I got off the board.

Other than a leash, I recommend buying a PFD to stay safe out there on the water. There are inflatable and standard foam life jackets that are USCG approved for paddle boarding.

Do paddle boards come with coil ankle SUP leashes?

As paddle boarding becomes more popular safety gear is becoming more common.

A lot of paddle board companies are starting to include a coil leash with the purchase of their boards.

Make sure you read about what is included with the purchase of the board and more times than not you will find that a coil SUP leash is included.

Where do I tie my ankle leash to an inflatable stand up paddle board ISUP?

90% of paddle board companies will include a D-link on the tail of the ISUP to secure an ankle leash to. If your board doesn’t have one you can buy D-links (click to view on Amazon) that are made to be glued to inflatable stand up paddle boards.

All you need is a little PVC glue (click to view on Amazon) and the special D-link (click to view on Amazon) and you are all set.

For detailed instructions on how to glue a D-link or ring to an ISUP check out this instructional video by Tower Paddleboards.

What length SUP leash for an 8″ SuP?

If you are using the 8′ SUP for surfing then a straight 9′ SUP leash is going to be perfect.

If you are using the 8′ SUP for everyday paddle boarding on flat water or even normal ocean paddle boarding then a standard 10′ coil leash will be just right.

How to put a SUP leash on a board.

Most paddle boards have a D-link in the top of the tail by the air valve. Simply connect the end of the SUP leash with the clip to the tail D-link then secure the ankle cuff to your ankle.

If your paddle board does not have any D-links you can easily install one yourself. Scroll up to check out the “Where do I tie my ankle leash to an inflatable stand up paddle board ISUP?”

You will find instructions on how to install a D-link and also where to buy inflatable paddle board D-links.

Which is better a coil leash or a standard leash for SUP?

Coil leashes are normally better than standard leashes for SUP.

The only exception is if you are surfing with your SUP. In that case, a standard leash that is one foot longer than your board is appropriate.

SUP leash what does SUP mean?

SUP stands for “stand up paddle board.”

Where to wear SUP leash?

SUP leashes are worn on the ankle. That way it’s out of the way for the paddle and when you fall off you can swim freely and the leash won’t be in the way of your arms.

What is the difference between straight and coiled leash SUP?

Straight leashes are a straight cable that sits on your board or in the water. They are used for surfing and SUP surfing.

A coiled SUP leash is curled so it can extend easily but also be out of the water and neatly sitting on your SUP. They are used for every kind of SUP activity except SUP surfing.

SUP leash gets in the way when pivot turning.

When doing quick maneuvers or turns like the pivot turn a standard SUP leash can get in the way. A coil SUP leash is more compact and takes up less space.

It shouldn’t get in the way when doing pivot turns. If you buy a long coil SUP leash and it’s still getting in the way. Try getting a shorter length until you can comfortably turn your paddle board.

What size SUP leash to wear.

When it comes to normal paddle boarding a 10 or 11 foot coil SUP leash is usually the norm. If you paddle board surf get a standard straight SUP leash that is 1 foot longer than your paddle board.
